If you are learning about plants with children, a really informative activity is to dissect a seed. Larger seeds, such as beans, are the best type to use.
Firstly, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before the activity.
After soaking, the seed coat should easily slip off. Use your finger nails to prise open the seed open. It should quite easily split in half.
Children can use a magnifying glass to look closely at the parts of the embryo inside the shell.
