A mini topic on sunflowers is a great back to school activity. Chances are, children would have planted sunflower seeds in the spring and hopefully they have watched them grow. The best time to do all the lovely sunflower activities is AFTER they have bloomed. After children have experienced watching them grow and seen the beauty of them in the flesh.
These are some of my favourite sunflower activities I have enjoyed with children.
1. As shared in my last post, dissecting a dead sunflower and collecting the seeds, reading for planting next year, is the best way to learn about the life cycle.
2. Learning about the life cycle of a sunflower. You might complete a cut and stick activity, write about it, draw it, paint it, make it out of dough....however you want!

3. Clay Sunflower
Make a sunflower out of clay. Either air dry (pictured here) or traditional kiln clay looks fab when it's painted.
4. Paint a Sunflower
This can be done with children of any age. Look at the famous sunflower paintings by Van Gogh. Talk about all the different colours and shades that can be seen in different sunflowers. So much easier for children when they have actually seen a sunflower!
5. Make A Sunflower Out Of Natural Materials
Autumn is also a great time to make a sunflower out of natural materials as it's a great time of year to find all the orange and yellow leaves! Pine cones, stones, acorns etc can all be used as the seeds in the middle.
6. Make a scrunchy tissue sunflower.
Great activity to improve fine motor skills.
7. Label the parts of a sunflower.

8. Handprint sunflower
Make a sunflower using handprints as the petals. This could be an individual one or alternatively make a huge class sunflower!
9. Pasta Sunflower.
Make a sunflower out of different types of pasta! Fusilli pasta (twirly corkscrew shape) or penne is perfect for the petals and rice can be used for the seeds.
10. Plant a sunflower seed.
Couldn't leave this one out! And so the cycle begins again!
